BabyDogs by Joe Lee Hanley Eight
These little babies are the loving creation of ceramist Jo Lee from Leeds.
Each BabyDog is a totally unique and wonderful creature… each head is put on at a different angle, each quiff individually quoffed, each marking carefully painted and the eyes are specially selected. A kind of modern day mantelpiece Staffordshire Dog with a load of quirkiness thrown in.
Made using two hand-made plaster moulds, with very fine fibre to add strength and flexibility to the clay, the heads are cast from Jo’s childhood dolls and individually hand-painted with their own distinctive black markings.
After firing the head and body, the BabyDogs are then given their own eyes: Jo takes photographs of faces, crops out the eyes in Photoshop, turns them black and white then plays with the light and contrast before making them into ceramic decals. These are placed onto the BabyDog and left over night to dry before the final transfer firing.
Jo Lee is a mixed media artist & educator based in Yorkshire who creates & makes from her studio, aptly named “Boo!” because it’s always a surprise as to what comes out of it! She is fascinated by people and the traces left by their existences, emotions, ageing and relationships and loves watching, drawing and photographing them. She draws inspiration from people such as Christian Boltanski, Tony Oursler, Ron Mueck, Juan Munoz, Neil Gaiman, Gordon Baldwin, Carol McNicoll & Mr Potato Head.
