Colours for 2017

Greenery-pantone-color-of-the-year

For those of you that have been following me on Instagram you’ll notice there has been tons of green creeping into my posts.  What a joy, therefore, to read in all the colour predictions for this coming year that green is making a big statement and knocking loudly on the door of our old chum grey, who’s beeen keeping us company for some time.

Don’t get me wrong, I love grey, I use it a lot in my decorating schemes, it is the perfect interior designer’s tool, but I tend to use it more as a backdrop rather than a complete canvas, thus allowing the other colours to have their say.

Pantone have chosen their Colour of the Year, “Greenery” – it’s a very urgent green, slightly Kermit-like and I’m not sure I could use it on all four walls of a room unless it was holding court with masses of pictures and either bleached out furniture and floors with linens and lace billowing in the breeze with a battered dull rose velvet sofa, or heavy dark furniture with mountains of plush velvets everywhere in deep golds, amethysts and reds.  But as the primary colour of the scheme it wouldn’t be my first choice.

I prefer to think of it as an accessory against a dark unyeilding background of deep greens, inky blues and not forgetting the dinosoar of decorating, that old codger Grey.

But you know what, I never follow colour predictions because sometimes I just don’t like them and then find it difficult to be inspired.  For example, last years Pantone colour Serenity, a rather vapid blue, just left me cold, even more so when teamed with their double headlining colour Rose Quartz, which was quite lovely alone but almost sick inducing when teamed with Serenity (it reminded me of marketing for cosmetic dentists who offer gleaming white smiles at the drop of a few thousand quid but have absolutely no idea about colour combos).  No, I just follow nature, she leads the way in her colour scheming and what ho, she uses an awful lot of green!  I think if I could sum up my all time decorating inspirations they would be found in a giant vase of hydraengas in all their blousy beauty, in varying stages from newly harvested, through drying and on to their last vestiges of washed out cobwebbey petals.  Here’s my last pick of the season from my garden, in September, which then translates on to Christmas Eve by candlelight, quite beautiful!

And here, below, are some pics from my walk this morning, showing Nature’s own “Greenery” lying side by side with the colours of the season.  The moss in the Forest is going mad after all the wetness of the past few years and when the sun catches it I ask myself “Who has need of Pantone for inspiration?”.
